| | | Kurth Foundation grant will fund 180 additional laptops for LHS students | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 6:50:00 AM by Blog57 Team | | The Lufkin Independent School District has received a $168,800 grant from the Kurth Foundation to be used for the "Computers on Wheels" program, according to Lynn Torres, LISD assistant superintendent. The program is designed to increase the laptop capacity at the high school. The grant will assist the district in purchasing six portable wireless laptop carts, each consisting of 30 student laptops, a teacher laptop, a projector and a printer that can be networked between the laptops. During an LISD finance meeting Tuesday, Torres said the acquisition will allow students to improve technology application and research skills, benefiting students who may not have access to a home computer and assisting with state-mandated online testing. LISD Superintendent Roy Knight said the grant will "allow the district to move forward — a lot more quickly than anticipated — toward the goal of acquiring at least one mobile wireless cart for every elementary campus." Morty Halyard, head of maintenance for LISD, said the middle school auditorium remodeling project is a little behind schedule because of communication issues, but expects the drawings to be completed sometime next week and sent to J.E.... | |

| | | Plant doc is always in when gardeners click on computers | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 2:58:56 AM by Blog57 Team | | Gardeners are using computers for everything from operating lawn-sized irrigation systems to determining how much insecticide should be dusted on tomato plants, from running digital weather stations to logging the return of the first migrating hummingbird. Some people use their computers to track the average dates of killing frosts. Many others buy special software to help landscape their property, plot the shape of their vegetable gardens and flowerbeds or suggest how to rotate their plants year to year. Computers can be used all winter to plant for the next gardening season. Use a spreadsheet to list every plant or seed you want from a certain catalog, and it keeps a running total as you go. It might help you stay within budget. With camera-capable cell phones, wireless laptops, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other Web browsers, the plant doctor is always in.... | |

| | | Education goes high-tech with free laptop computers for students | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 6:51:48 PM by Blog57 Team | | The sixth-graders at North Pole Middle School, like most of the students in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, have to bring pencils, notepads and textbooks to school each day. But the 60 or so sixth-graders at North Pole Middle School will now have a slightly more expensive piece of hardware in their backpacks. In October, each of these sixth-graders was given a $1,193.37 Apple MacBook laptop computer to use during class and for homework. "Its been my dream as a teacher that every child in my classroom would have access to a computer," said Jeff Jacobson, one of the two sixth-grade teachers at the middle school. "Now that dream has come true." In the classroom, the computers will become an integral part of the students' days, Jacobson said. With the laptops on their desks, the students will have instant access to the Internet thanks to a new high-speed wireless network installed in the school.... | |

| | | Gang leader used Web for hits, police say | | Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 10:53:01 AM by Blog57 Team | | A high-ranking Chicago gang member used a state website to help kill his targets, authorities say in today's Chicago Sun-Times. The man is Melvin "Ben Ben" Martin, arrested after members of the New Breeds gang -- which Martin allegedly led -- had a deadly shootout with Chicago police. "Officials painted a chilling picture of Martin, who was so calculating that he'd have hitmen wear latex gloves so gunshot residue wouldn't show up on their hands, and their handprints wouldn't be found on the gun, authorities said. He'd have them carry out hits during busy times of the day -- including when school was letting out -- so shooters could better blend in to crowds, police said. "Martin also would go to the state corrections website, locate mugshots of his gang's intended targets and print them out for hitmen so they would know for whom they're looking." The website has a search engine with photos of inmates, parolees and fugitives.... | |

| | | US poll computers can be hacked, experts show | | Posted Sunday, October 29, 2006 6:54:35 PM by Blog57 Team | | WASHINGTONNew electronic voting machines to be used in the upcoming US legislative polls are raising concerns after several blunders that have revived memories of Floridas 2000 presidential election debacle. Americans will vote in state and local elections on Nov. 7 and for members of the US House of Representatives and Senate. Anything is possible, warned Kimball Brace, head of the political consulting firm US Election Data Services. Weve got more than a third of the nation voting on something new this year and history has shown that the first time somebody uses a new piece of voting equipment, thats the time that they are going to have problems. Brace said nearly 40 percent of voters on election day will be using paperless touch-screen machines that have raised concerns among many experts nationwide as they leave no paper trail and are vulnerable to hackers.... | |
