Karamchand set for a short run on Sony
Posted Wednesday, February 07, 2007 2:50:16 PM by Blog57 Team
On Doordarshan, Pankaj Parashar's trendsetter serial Karamchand had a run for a little over three years from 1985. This time, the serial that launches on Sony this Saturday, will have a much- shorter run. While Sony officials maintain that Karamchand will crack 14 mysteries in as many episodes, sources say that a lackadaisical approach to the production may result in the series being cut short to seven episodes. Pankaj Kapoor, who played the inimitable carrot-munching detective was unavailable for comment. He had earlier gone on record to say that while he was reluctant to take up Karamchand again, it was producer-director Parashar's enthusiasm for the project that won him over. Sony has started airing sleek promos featuring the vintage Karamchand, and his scatterbrained assistant, Kitty....

Dell at helm of Dell

DELL, the world's largest maker of personal computers, is back under the control of the man who built the company from his University of Texas bedroom. Chairman Michael Dell, who stepped down as chief executive in 2004, will now be in charge of the day-to-day running of the firm he founded in 1984, replacing Kevin Rollins, who Dell had personally picked to be his successor. During Rollins's tenure, Dell was battered by a recall of 4.1 million potentially flammable notebook batteries made by Sony and by disappointing earnings. News of Dell's return lifted the stock by 5 per cent, in hopes he would reinvigorate the company. IBM Galvanized by Video Game Business
Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 6:54:46 PM by Blog57 Team
No matter whether Nintendo Co., Microsoft Corp. or Sony Corp. wins the video game console war, there already is one huge victor: IBM Corp., which designed and makes the microprocessors for all three units. Not very long ago, some analysts were suggesting that IBM sell its microelectronics division, which produces processors for IBM servers and a wide range of other devices, including automotive and telecommunications gear. As recently as 2004, IBM was struggling to attract enough outside chip-making work to cover the enormous cost of manufacturing. Sales of chips to other companies remained flat that year and chip profitability was marginal at best. (The unit that includes chips lost $252 million in 2003; IBM stopped releasing detailed figures after that). Now, because of the video game deals, IBM is expected to see about $3.7 billion in sales of chips and associated design services this year, up from $2.9 billion last year and $2.5 billion in 2004....

For electronics makers, holiday season may be more ho-hum than ho-ho

SAN MATEO, California -- A fierce battle is brewing for consumer-electronics dollars as two new video game consoles join the widening mix of TVs, cameras, portable music players, computers and cell phones. But some market watchers say the electronics industry could be running up against a tough gift-giving holiday season. Analysts predict revenues are slowing for several reasons: prices for a range of products, most notably flat-panel TVs, have dropped significantly; hits of previous years, such as digital cameras, are maturing; supplies of the new game systems are limited; and no other new blockbuster products seem to have emerged. While mainstays like TVs, Apple Computer Inc.'s iPods, and laptops will still fuel sales, there appears to be little on the horizon to trigger a repeat of the revenue growth of recent years....

Problems Abound for Sony
Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 2:52:56 AM by Blog57 Team
Sony Corp. has receded from its days of glory, when the Walkman was the synonym for portable music and PlayStation 2 was the pinnacle of video game consoles, having unseated the mighty Nintendo. While Sony was once an icon of quality, now its batteries are being recalled as fire hazards, mass production problems are delaying wide release of its much-awaited PlayStation 3, and rivals are outselling its TV sets. Amid all this, the company posted a 71 percent decline in the operating profit of its electronic segment in the most recent fiscal quarter, with overall profit down 94 percent, weighed down among other things by the costs of launching the PS3. Howard Stringer, Sony's first non-Japanese chief executive, is leading the company in a turnaround plan, but the effort has hit some snags, notably the recall of 9.6 million laptop batteries that has cost the company $429 million so far....

Sony Recalls 90,000 Batteries in Its Vaio Computers (Update2)
Posted Friday, October 27, 2006 12:52:13 PM by Blog57 Team
Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world's second- largest consumer-electronics maker, is recalling 90,000 batteries used in its Vaio computers, the first time in a two-month global recall that it's replacing power packs in its own laptops. About 60,000 of the power packs will be replaced in Japan, and the rest in China, Daichi Yamafuji, a spokesman for Tokyo- based Sony, said over the telephone today. Kyodo News reported Sony may recall an additional 250,000 units globally, citing an unidentified Sony official. Sony earlier today said it may revise its 130 billion yen ($1.1 billion) annual profit forecast as it recalls more than 8 million batteries worldwide on concern some cells overheat and become fire hazards. The company has so far only said it's spending between 20 billion yen and 30 billion yen to replace batteries in Dell Inc....
