It seems no less remarkable, now that it has finally happened. With great fanfare and unexpected haste, Apple made over its entire computer line this year with chips from Intel, the longtime partner of Apple rival Microsoft. Also this year, Microsoft radically redesigned its long-dominant Office software suite, even as it revamps the next version of Windows, known as Vista. Even the once homely, if ever-reliable, BlackBerry sports a striking new design. ....

The Syracuse Post-Standard: Choosing a new personal computer is ...

"Choosing a new personal computer used to be difficult. But this year, the choice is especially easy, thanks to a new kind of computer from one of the oldest manufacturers in the PC business," Al Fasoldt reports for The Syracuse Post-Standard. "The new computer is a dual-function PC from Apple Computer, which has been making personal computers since the mid-1970s. It's sold with Apple's advanced internal software, or operating system, along with a suite of programs for managing photos and music, making DVDs, recording audio, doing e-mail and Web browsing," Fasoldt reports. I've been recommending Apple's [Mac] computers for many years [which] are easier to use than the ones made by all the other PC makers, called Windows PCs. They're also much safer - Windows PCs are, literally, under siege from 200,000 viruses and countless spyware invaders, while Macs have no actual viruses or spyware - and, as if this weren't enough, Macs also tend to last longer," Fasoldt reports....

Cookware to computers

What began as a five-man operation in an abandoned railroad station in New Holland has endured 60 years and today calls itself Alcoa Mill Products Lancaster. The county fixture has grown from a provincial maker of aluminum roofing for agricultural buildings to a global aluminum supplier, producing 450 million pounds a year and employing 860 people. Ive been here since 1973, said company spokesman Steve Fries. And the one constant has been the can-do work force. We have a lot of good, creative problem solvers. Those workers make a high-quality product used in less-than-glamorous items such as car radiators and pots and pans, though Apple Computer uses aluminum from the Lancaster plant for the sleek casings on its G5 and iMac computers....

BUSINESS BAROMETER: Apple debuts iTunes Latino
Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 2:54:31 PM by Blog57 Team
Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday launched iTunes Latino, a dedicated area within its U.S. online store for Latin music, videos, audio books and podcasts. The iTunes store, the world's leading digital music outlet with more than 1.5 billion songs sold since its launch, had previously included Latin as a music genre, but company officials said customers were asking for more Latin content. Offering a dedicated Latino section with a broader product mix also made sense given the nation's growing Latino population, of which more than half are Internet users, said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes. "It's a key opportunity that we were missing," said Cue, whose father is from Spain. The new section features different music genres, including regional Mexicano, baladas y boleros and pop Latino, as well as Spanish-language and bilingual TV shows under a new deal with NBC Universal's Telemundo, the nation's second-rated Spanish-speaking network....

Apple Computers: the power of creativity and intelligence

For everyone who knows me now this may come as a shock, but I was a bit of a nerd when I was in high school. Specifically, there was an eminently forgettable period of my high school career in which I became obsessed with computers. This was not manifest in the traditional ways—an insatiable craving for computer games or a mastery of the most forgotten-about corners of the C++ coding language. I was too lazy for all of that. Rather, for some reason, in the winter of ninth grade, I decided that I wanted my boring PC to look like a Mac, and I just became obsessed with fooling myself into thinking I had a Mac. This was long before the Steve Jobs renaissance, the iPod, or even OS X. In fact, I suspect that this was some sort of rebellious urge to control and create my personal space. As my parents had long since deprived me of that right vis-a-vis my bedroom (honestly, who needs 12 decorative pillows on his bed?), I guess that controlling my virtual space was the best available substitute for putting up posters in my room....

MacBooks software fix issued by Apple
Posted Monday, October 30, 2006 2:53:39 AM by Blog57 Team
Apple Computer Inc. has issued a software fix to address a problem of some MacBooks shutting down randomly without warning. The problem affects a "small percentage" of the notebook computers that Apple introduced in May, the company said in an e-mailed statement. Apple posted a firmware update on its Web site Thursday and advised all MacBook owners to install the software. The fix will eliminate the need for customers to bring their machines in for service, the Cupertino-based company said. Apple spokeswoman Lynn Fox declined to comment beyond the statement. Reports of the surprise shutdowns began surfacing on Mac-user Web sites a few months ago. More than 1,500 users had registered with Macbookrandomshutdown.com since the site launched in August. Talk about this and more on the Courier-Post forums! or send a letter to the editor....

Apple on Tuesday updated its professional line of notebook computers adding the new Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The MacBook Pro now also includes twice the standard RAM and higher capacity hard drives, as well as FireWire 800 ports. The MacBook Pro with the Core 2 Duo is up to 39 percent faster than the previous generation MacBook and more than seven times faster than the 1.67GHz PowerBook, according to Apple. Application specific tasks show vast improvements over previous generation models, as well, with DV rendering and encoding increasing by 39 percent and Aperture running 25 percent faster. "The great thing about the performance of the Core 2 Duo is that you don't sacrifice desktop performance to get mobility," David Moody, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Mac Product Marketing, told Macworld....

THE European business of Apple Computer had sales of $4.1 billion (£2.2 billion) in the 12 months to the end of September ? more than the combined total for its 2002, 2003 and 2004 financial years. ?It?s an indication of the exponential growth of this business,? said Pascal Cagni, the head of Apple Europe.
