Toshiba Qosmio G30 Portable Entertainment Center with HD DVD-ROM

A couple of years ago there started to appear notebooks that seemed to violate the concept of mobile personal computers at first glance. Large dimensions, weight, and a short battery life are not favorable to real mobile work. Come to think of it, there are different types of mobility, and computers can be used not only for work, but also for entertainment. So, the appearance of notebooks with a wide 20" panel weighing over eight kilograms is just an evolution of the concept of a multimedia notebook. Indeed, the real [not personal] multimedia implies a large screen, so a notebook won't be small. An important peculiarity of modern video materials is high requirements to CPU performance. A gaming model must also possess a fast video card. Add a large volume of memory and RAID with two hard drives....

Lenovo Group Ltd., the world's No. 3 maker of personal computers, said Thursday that its fiscal second-quarter net profit fell 16 percent from a year earlier because of slow growth, price-cutting and the cost of absorbing IBM's PC division. The company still needed a "few quarters" before the deal with IBM Corp. would pay off, said William Amelio, Lenovo's president and chief executive officer. Other challenges included improving the company's supply chain and boosting brand recognition in the huge U.S. market, he said. "Building new muscles takes some time," said William Amelio, Lenovo's president and chief executive officer. "But when the new muscles kick in, we'll be a PC powerhouse with no equal." Net profit for the quarter ending Sept. 30 was $38 million, compared to $45.4 million the year before, the company said....

Two independent retail chains have closed their doors after being unable to sustain sufficient sales. Rodent SA shut up shop last month after being unable to pay its bills. The company was trading as Cherry Computers. With stores in Adelaide and Malvern, its primary business was selling PCs and accessories. The manager of the Malvern store, who would not disclose his full name, said it had experienced cash flow problems. Local and national distributors are still owed money. Rodent is establishing arrangements to pay back debts. The store manager claimed the total amount was under $100,000. No administrators are involved at this stage. Rodent is one of several parties in SA operating as Cherry Computers. Cherry Computers Brighton store owner, Michael Coulter, said he would continue to trade but was considering changing its name....

As American consumers prepare for the upcoming holiday shopping season, a new national survey spotlights the popularity of home electronics on individual and family wish lists. More than 2,200 moms and dads responded to the survey, commissioned by consumer electronics retailer, Circuit City Stores, Inc. More than half (51 percent) chose home electronics, such as a new TV, digital camera or PC, as their top choice for a holiday gift for the whole family. Home electronics beat out a family trip (29 percent), a new car (four percent), new home appliances (also four percent) and "other" gift ideas (12 percent). Asked what kind of tech gift they personally would like to receive, moms and dads agreed they'd prefer a new TV. Top three tech gift choices for men: * Advanced TV, such as flat panel or HDTV (41 percent) * New computer (19 percent) * Video game system, such as Xbox 360(TM), PlayStation(R)3, or Nintendo Wii(TM) (10 percent) Top three choices for women: * Advanced TV, such as flat panel or HDTV (24 percent) * New computer (22 percent) * Digital camera (16 percent) Other tech gift choices included MP3 players, DVD players, a new cell phone and a new camcorder....

What's Behind Acer's Vista Complaints?
Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 2:49:42 PM by Blog57 Team
In an interview published last week by the British publication PC Pro Acer Senior Vice President James Wong complained that Microsoft -- a company with which Acer has, at least on paper, partnered -- is actively scheming to force computer users to invest in more expensive PCs, in order to take advantage of the more feature-rich tier of its upcoming operating system, Windows Vista Home Premium. "The new experience you hear of, if you get [Vista Home] Basic, you won't feel it at all," Wong reportedly stated, adding that the company is actually actively undermining its own lower tier in an effort to persuade customers to move up the value chain. ....

PC, TV: Company says chip will bridge
Posted Sunday, October 29, 2006 10:52:37 PM by Blog57 Team
The problem with YouTube, Major League Baseball's MLB.TV or any other Internet video is that you end up trapped in front of your computer screen instead of your usual television-watching haven. Safi U. Qureshey wants to fix that. Qureshey, who may forever be known as the "S" in the 1980s Irvine, Calif., computer company AST Research, has spent the past three years developing a chip that will let any image or video that can be seen on a computer also be watched on a nearby TV. It works wirelessly. In any video format available. "We've solved the problem of taking video to TV," Qureshey said. Quartics Inc., which officially launched this month, developed the agnostic video chip to watch PC videos on a TV. Qureshey financed the first two years and attracted funding from two venture capital firms last year....

Acer reported a 40 percent rise in nine-months net profit on Thursday, thanks to a global rise in demand for laptop computers. The firm posted a net profit of T$8.95 billion for the first three quarters, and also posted a better-than-expected 6 percent fall in third-quarter profits. Acer, Taiwan's top computer brand and the world's fourth-largest PC vendor, made a net profit of T$1.85 billion ($55.5 million) in the July-September quarter, down from T$1.97 billion in the same period a year ago. The result beat expectations for a T$1.74 billion third quarter profit, based on the mean of forecasts from eleven analysts surveyed by Reuters Estimates.
